Abstract

April 2011, the food ingredients group contributed the most to the formation of deflation in Bandar Lampung City. Meanwhile, the groups that are holding back the rate of deflation are the clothing group and the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups. The decline in prices of various commodities in the foodstuffs group resulted in deflation in Bandar Lampung City of 0.10 percent.

Only one group in April 2011 experienced a decline in the index which caused deflation, namely the foodstuffs group which was mainly due to the decline in prices of red chilies, rice, spinach, cayenne peppers, green chilies, purebred chicken eggs and red onions. Five other groups experienced an increase in the index which held back the rate of deflation, namely the clothing group, the housing, water, electricity, gas & fuel group, the transport, communication & financial services group, the health group, and the ready-made food, beverages, cigarettes & tobacco group. Deflation in Bandar Lampung City was ranked 16th out of 66 cities where price developments were observed. A total of 9 cities experienced inflation and 57 cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Ternate at 0.52 percent, while the largest deflation occurred in Jambi at 1.57 percent.

Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), deflation occurred due to a decline in the index in the food expenditure group of 0.96 percent. The education, recreation and sports group did not experience a change in the index, while the clothing group experienced an increase in the index of 0.57 percent, the housing group rose 0.48 percent, the transportation group 0.05 percent, health 0.04 percent, and ready-made food, drinks , cigarettes, & tobacco 0.01 percent.

Several commodities that dominantly contributed to deflation include red chilies, rice, spinach, cayenne pepper, powder, green chilies, purebred chicken eggs, cement, shallots and granulated sugar. Calendar year (point to point) inflation in April 2011 was 1.00 percent, while year on year (yoy) inflation in Bandar Lampung City was 9.94 percent.
